To celebrate the International Nurses and Midwives Day 2023, RNMU CHUB carried out a series of activities. The week included activities that promote healthy living of the people of Huye District.
It involved screening for non-communicable diseases like Diabetes, HIV, blood pressure, and hepatitis B, sensitization on family planning methods and advice to mothers already using the various family planning methods.
To climax the week long series of activities, celebrations were held for nurses and midwives to take stoke of the achievements and reflect on the challenges faced over the past year.
The event was attended by nurses and midwives and the management team working at CHUB and the RNMU second vice president and RNMU PR and Communications officer.
In a bid to further contribute to the well-being of the people in Huye District, 1142 people were screened for NCDs during the Community health outreach 85 had Community Based Health Insurance (Mutuelle de santé), 47 people were diagnosed with high blood pressure, people were given health education and offered health related advice and 47 are being followed up.
RNMU second vice president Ms Chantal Mutuyimana while presiding over the celebrations, extended a vote of appreciation to CHUB leadership for the support and continuous opportunities they give to Nurses/midwives. The RNMU CHUB in support with the Ms Chantal extended a certificate of appreciation to the CHUB management department
At the celebrations the Director of Nursing CHUB thanked nurses and midwives for their commitment towards service delivery and called upon nurses and midwives to always work with integrity and value themselves. Furthermore, challenges faced by nurses and midwives were enumerated. They include:
- Inadequate nursing staff,
- Few nursing specialists
- Limited workshops to enhance the capacity of nurses.
- They also request for support from the hospital and RNMU to set up self-development projects
- Identification of health care professionals’ uniforms.
- Limited CPD courses
- Non recognition of the various nursing / midwifery levels of education and experience
During the celebrations, best Nurse/Midwife performers in the departments were awarded and 3 senior retired nurses were recognized in their honorary.
