Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU)
Rwanda nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU) is a combined professional organization and trade union in place to advocate and protect the nursing and midwifery profession in the aspects of labor, social and economic development. The mission of the Union is to have an empowered nurse and midwife who is motivated to provide high quality service and uphold professional excellence while enjoying quality life. RNMU is also a representing body of the Rwandan nurses and midwives at the national regional and international.
East, Central and Southern Africa College of Nursing (ECSACON)
Among the RNMU affiliations is the East, Central and Southern Africa College of Nursing (ECSACON) which was established in 1990 as an executing arm of the then Commonwealth Regional Health Community Secretariat for East, Central and Southern Africa (CRHCS-ECSA) in the area of nursing and midwifery. The Arusha-based CRHC-ECSA secretariat which is now referred as ECSA Health Community (ECSA HC) brings together 16 regional states. The member states are Botswana, Kenya, Lesotho, Malawi, Mauritius, Mozambique, Namibia, Rwanda, Seychelles, South Africa, South Sudan, Swaziland, Tanzania, Uganda, Zambia and Zimbabwe. ECSA Health Community mandate is to promote and encourage efficiency and relevance in the provision of health-related services in the region, while its mission is to promote the highest standards of health for individuals, families and communities in the ECSA region.
The mission for ECSACON is to be the leading Centre for Excellence in Nursing and Midwifery education clinical practice, research, and management in Africa and the world over and its Vision is to improve quality of health of the communities in the ECSA region through strengthening of the contribution of the frontline health workers (nurses and midwives) towards delivery of quality health care services. ECSACON is, therefore, committed to promoting and strengthening professional excellence through development of programmes that will strengthen nursing and midwifery education, practice, management, leadership and in the ECSA region. ECSACON is further committed to regional and international collaboration and networking with member states and organizations with similar interests.
Background
The East, Central and Southern Africa College of Nursing (ECSACON), The East Central and Southern Africa Health Community (ECSA – HC) and The Ministry of Health of the Kingdom of Eswatini and its partners organized the 15th Biennial Scientific Conference and 7th Quadrennial General Assembly in Mbabane, Eswatini from 13th-18th September 2022. The major aim of the conference was to bring together Nurses and Midwives and other professionals across the ECSA Region and beyond to share knowledge and exchange professional experience for the purpose of improving the quality of health care services. It was an opportunity for participants to learn and interact with nurses and midwives’ organizations within and outside the ECSA region.
