This week, the Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU) conducted a Disability Inclusion Training on Sign Language for Nurses, midwives, customer care providers, PROs from Masaka District Hospital and its affiliated health centers.
The training aimed to enhance healthcare providers’ knowledge and practical skills in sign language, enabling them to communicate more effectively with patients who are deaf or hard of hearing through interactive learning sessions and practical exercises.
There is a need to better support mothers with hearing impairments who come to seek maternity services. The training helped healthcare providers communicate with them more easily and better understand their needs.
Participants also learned about the importance of creating inclusive and accessible healthcare environments where every patient can communicate their health needs and receive appropriate care without barriers.
By investing in disability inclusion and the capacity of nurses and midwives, RNMU continues to promote equitable, patient-centered healthcare and support healthcare professionals in providing quality services to all members of the community, ensuring that no patient is left behind because of a communication or accessibility barrier.
