RNMU Provided Sustainable Support to Nurse Murekatete Jovia Following a Work-Related Accident That Led to Disability

The Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU) has reaffirmed its commitment to supporting nurses and midwives by providing sustainable assistance to Murekatete Jovia, a nurse who has been living with a long-term disability following an accident that occurred while she was serving at Kiziguro Hospital in 2009.

Since the occurrence of the accident, which prevented her from continuing her professional duties, RNMU has remained committed to supporting her through assistance with medical care and living allowances.

Recognizing the need for a more sustainable solution, RNMU initiated an intervention aimed at improving her long-term well-being and supporting her ability to generate income.

Following a needs assessment conducted through a visit to her home in Musheri Sector, Nyagatare District, RNMU provided a comprehensive support package, including the renovation of her house, two water tanks for rainwater harvesting and water storage to support household needs and income generation through water-related activities, household items such as sofa chairs, beds, mattresses, bed covers, bedsheets, and curtains, as well as a three-month food supply.

RNMU also provided financial support of RWF 3 million to enable her to purchase land for agricultural activities, creating a sustainable source of income and strengthening her independence.

The support package was officially handed over on 9 May 2026 by RNMU staff and Board members, together with local government leaders, during a visit to her home. The initiative reflects RNMU’s continued recognition of her contribution and sacrifice in serving the nursing profession.

The event was covered by media outlets including Igihe, BTN TV, Kigali Today, RBA, and photographers, increasing awareness of the importance of supporting healthcare professionals who have dedicated their lives to serving others.

Through such initiatives, RNMU continues to uphold its commitment to the welfare, dignity, and social protection of nurses and midwives across Rwanda.
