The Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU) conducted a Continuous Professional Development (CPD) training for nurses and midwives from Nyaruguru District, focusing on strengthening Infection Prevention and Control (IPC), at Palast Rock Hotel in Bugesera during the first week of February 2026. The training was facilitated by Ms Clarisse Nzayisingiza and Mr François Nshimiyimana.
The training covered a wide range of IPC topics, including an introduction to IPC at primary healthcare facility level, IPC standards, standard precautions and transmission-based precautions, and IPC core components. Participants were also introduced to the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections (HCAIs) in healthcare settings, including an overview of antimicrobial use and antimicrobial resistance.
Other key topics covered focused on hand hygiene, injection safety, antiseptic and aseptic techniques, and common healthcare-associated infections. Practical guidance was provided on the use and preparation of chlorine, cleaning of reusable medical devices, and medical equipment cleaning, decontamination, and sterilization to ensure patient and staff safety.
The training also addressed occupational health, with emphasis on exposure risks among healthcare personnel and appropriate preventive measures within healthcare settings.
Participants actively engaged in discussions, shared experiences from their workplaces, and reflected on challenges in implementing IPC measures. The training aimed to strengthen compliance with IPC standards and promote safer healthcare practices.
The CPD training was officially closed by the President of RNMU, who thanked participants for their active participation and encouraged them to apply the knowledge gained in their respective health facilities. He reaffirmed RNMU’s commitment to supporting nurses and midwives through continuous professional development and capacity building.
