RNMU Empowers Health Leaders Through Gender Equity Training

The Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU) conducted a Gender Equity Training using a Gender Transformative Approach for district executive members from the Southern Province. Held at Palast Rock Hotel in Bugesera, during the first week of February 2026, the training aimed to build the capacity of RNMU members and enhance the value they bring to their work, in line with the union’s mission of promoting inclusiveness, fairness, and professional development among health workers.

Participants explored the fundamental concepts of gender equality and equity, learning how equal rights and responsibilities differ from fairness that considers individual needs and challenges. The facilitator, Nayebare Naomi, guided participants through discussions on gender norms and their impact on leadership, decision-making, and interactions within the workplace. Using real-life examples, participants reflected on how societal and professional gender roles influence the participation of men and women in RNMU activities and health services.

The session built on this foundation, expanding into the broader context of human rights, legal frameworks, and protection against gender-based violence and harassment (GBVH). Facilitator Nayebare Naomi led discussions on adopting a human rights-based approach and a gender transformative approach, emphasizing how these frameworks can guide policies and practices to create more equitable workplaces and communities. Participants also explored Rwanda’s legal, policy, and institutional frameworks for the promotion of gender equality, discussing how laws, regulations, and institutional structures support fair treatment, accountability, and protection for all, particularly women and girls.

Participants engaged in interactive exercises to apply these concepts, sharing experiences and strategies to strengthen gender-responsive practices in their respective districts. The training emphasized the importance of integrating gender equity principles into leadership, planning, and service delivery, ensuring that both men and women have equal opportunities to contribute and lead effectively.

The President of RNMU officially closed the training, appreciating the active participation and commitment of all attendees. He highlighted the importance of applying the knowledge and strategies gained to strengthen RNMU’s mission, promote inclusiveness, and empower health workers to become champions of gender equity in their districts.
