Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU) 2025 Achievements

The Rwanda Nurses and Midwives Union (RNMU) remains committed to its vision of empowering nurses and midwives to provide high-quality services while upholding professional excellence and enjoying a quality life. Guided by its mission to be a vibrant, self-sustaining organization that protects the professional image, improves social and economic welfare, and promotes the interests of nurses and midwives, RNMU undertook a series of impactful activities in 2025.

RNMU prioritized leadership and advocacy training throughout the year. Shop stewards across many districts received training to confidently represent their colleagues at the workplace, while young nurses and midwives participated in leadership programs aimed at empowering the next generation of healthcare leaders. Strategic membership and union ambassador training further strengthened the capacity of RNMU representatives across Rwanda.

To ensure a vibrant and inclusive membership, RNMU actively recruited new members in districts across the country, strengthening the union’s capacity to represent and advocate for nurses and midwives effectively.

In line with professional development and inclusion, RNMU offered multiple sign language and disability-inclusive training programs in partnership with UPHLS, equipping members to deliver accessible services in maternity care, customer service, and community outreach. Human rights and environmental sustainability trainings were also conducted to enhance professional competence and social responsibility among staff and focal persons.

RNMU engaged members at workplace and district levels, gathering feedback and celebrating key professional events including International Women’s Day, International Nurses’ Day, and International Midwives’ Day. These activities recognized the dedication and service of nurses and midwives across Rwanda.

On 22.07.2025, the RNMU president & other nurse/midwife associations' leaders met the Hon. MOH to discuss key professional issues, including preparations for the upcoming International Nurses/Midwives Scientific Conference in December 2025.

RNMU strengthened partnerships through participation in the African Nurses & Midwives Confederation Conference in Accra, Ghana, and welcomed visiting delegations from Ghana. Partnerships with organizations such as Pfizer supported professional development initiatives.

The union also championed environmental initiatives, including the tree planting in Nyagatare District on november28,2025, and sustainability training for student clubs and local representatives, promoting a healthier environment for communities and healthcare facilities.

The year culminated in the 1st International Nurses & Midwives Scientific Conference ,held on December 10-12,2025, at Kigali Lemigo Hotel ,under the theme: “Towards Universal Health Coverage (UHC): The Role of Nurses and Midwives in Strengthening Healthcare Systems in Developing Countries.” Over 500 participants from Rwanda, Africa, and around the world gathered to celebrate, learn, and shape the future of healthcare.

Through these initiatives, RNMU has demonstrated its unwavering commitment to empowering nurses and midwives, improving professional standards, and contributing to the delivery of high-quality healthcare across Rwanda and beyond.

                                  Solidarity Forever.
